NYSHSFCA hosts Boys 7 on 7 Football Summer Championships and Lineman Challenges

CORTLAND, NY (WBNG) - The New York State High School Football Coaches Association hosted the Boys 7 on 7 Football Championships and Lineman Challenge at Cortland on Saturday afternoon. The tournament consisted of close to 50 different New York State high schools with pool play games beginning at 11 A.M. on Saturday, July 13.

The Deposit offense was rolling with back-to-back touchdowns from quarterback Blake Fortunato, earning them the 14 seed in the playoffs. Runner-up state champion Maine-Endwell and their quarterback Preston Acker were also finding success through the air, securing them the 6 seed. 12 Sports spoke with Maine-Endwell head coach Matt Gallagher about what his team’s expectations are.

“Our expectation every year is obviously to win a state championship,” said Gallagher. “We fell short last year, but the guys coming back and the mentality they’re approaching the season with, we’re pretty excited about where we are right now.”

Waverly was dominating on offense and defense, converting a touchdown to wide receiver Dalton Davis off an interception, where they would go in as the 2 seed. The Windsor brother-to-brother connection was apparent with a spectacular one-handed grab by Kohen Werner from quarterback Ashton Werner. 12 Sports spoke with Windsor head coach Tim Hogan who believes this is a great opportunity to experiment going into the fall.

“We use a lot of different coverages here, but we just to have them in our arsenal if we need them,” said Hogan. “A lot of this stuff we’re seeing today we won’t necessarily see throughout the year, but it’s always good to know you can adjust and make adjustments like that, and make plays when you have to.”

Chenango Forks quarterback Sam Passkey was letting it fly with this touchdown, sneaking them in as the 16 seed. Owego was able to just sneak in as the 15 seed as well with quarterback Elijah Lewis leading the way. Maine Endwell’s Coach Gallagher also discussed the current state of high school football in New York.

“This is great for New York football,” said Gallagher. “50 teams out here playing on a Saturday. So, it really shows how disciplined our state is, and our organization at the top level of our state and how they put this together. We’re grateful for that, and it shows with New York State football and how well we do, so we’re excited about it going into the playoffs and we’ll see what happens.”

After a stunning Cinderella run, 15-seed Owego lost to 4-seed CSP on the last play in the finals of the 7 on 7 tournament.
